Iran: Akbar Ganji denied medical treatment
The Writers in Prison Committee (WiPC) of International PEN is deeply
concerned about reports of the denial of medical treatment to Akbar
Ganji,
a noted journalist imprisoned since April 2000. The WiPC believes that
the
imprisonment of Akbar Ganji is a flagrant violation of his right to free
expression and demands his immediate release.
According to reports received by the WiPC, Akbar Ganji went on hunger
strike on 19 May in protest at his treatment by the authorities. He has
been denied urgently needed medical treatment and has been prohibited
from
contacting his family by phone since September 2000. According to
credible
reports, he has been suffering from asthma, backache, failing eyesight
and
a persistent cough. Despite being recommended for medical treatment by a
number of specialists, the Prosecutor's Office has refused to grant the
requisite permission.
Background
Akbar Ganji was arrested on 22 April 2000 following his participation in
an
academic and cultural conference held in Berlin on 7-9 April of the same
year, entitled "Iran after the elections", at which political and social
reforms in the country were publicly debated. His trial started on 9
November 2000 and on 13 January 2001, he was sentenced by Bench 3 of
Tehran's Revolutionary Court to ten years' imprisonment, four years for
his
attendance at the conference and six years for other charges, including
"spreading propaganda against the Islamic regime" due to a series of
articles he had written implicating leading political figures in the
murders of several dissidents and intellectuals in the mid-late 1990s.
He
was also sentenced to five years' internal exile. On 15 May 2001, an
appeal
court reduced his 10-year sentence to six months and overturned his
additional sentence of five years' internal exile. However, the Tehran
judiciary challenged the appeal court decision and brought new charges
against him in connection with newspaper articles he had written prior
to
April 2000, and his possession of photocopies of foreign newspapers. He
was
sentenced on 16 July 2001 to six years' imprisonment on charges of
"collecting confidential information harmful to national security and
spreading propaganda against the Islamic system".
Ganji is the author of the best-selling book Dungeon of Ghosts, a
collection of his newspaper articles which were published in early 2000,
in
which he implicated the former president, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, and
other leading establishment figures, in a number of political
killings which occurred in the 1990s. The book is said to have seriously
damaged the reputation of Rafsanjani. Akbar Ganji is currently serving
his
sentence in Evin Prison.
Please send appeals:
- Expressing serious concern about the violation of Akbar Ganji's
right to free expression and calling for his immediate release;
- Seeking assurances that he will receive promptly, the appropriate
medical attention;
- Urging the Iranian authorities to abide by the International
Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, an instrument Iran ratified in
1968
and which guarantees the right to freedom of expression.
