Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights
United Nations Office
I
respectfully urge you to take swift action to secure the freedom of Iranian
prisoner Nasser Khirolahi from Raji Sharhr prison in the city of
Karaj,
Iran.
According to Human Rights Watch he may face the death penalty after being
charged with meeting a foreign element inside Iran and has been prosecuted,
without any evidence or proof, on trumped up charges of being a national
security risk to the Iranian government.
Mr.
Nasser Khirolahi, an Iranian civil servant, has been in jail since March 2003
and has been tortured repeatedly while being denied representation. His only
crime has been his attempt to unveil corruption observed when he worked as a
civil servant in the office of Mayor in the city of
Isfahan. Mr.
Khirolahi was forced to resign and a short time later, while attempting to
develop an independent business, was arrested by official orders from the city
of Isfahan Intelligence Services, collaborating with the Greater
Tehran
Secret and Intelligence Services. He was picked up by the secret police and
Pasdaran in the city of
Tehran
in broad daylight as he was about to board the Metro.
He was jailed under charges of contacting foreign elements and
being in touch with Iranians outside
Iran.
In speaking with his wife, she said he was about to go public about the money
laundering and corruption he saw in the
Isfahan
government office where he worked. He has been in jail for 4 years and recently
was transferred to the distant
Karaj
prison where he has no access to his family. He has been on a hunger strike for
two months with the hope of gaining attention to his case.
In a conversation with his wife on February 15, 2007, we were
told that while in prison both of his elbows, his collarbone and ribs have been
broken. He has had no access to an attorney and was prosecuted without any
representation. He is currently very weak and there is a likelihood that he will
soon die in prison.
Mr. Khirolahi was an unfortunate witness to much corruption and
jeopardy of public funds by executives in
Isfahan
city hall. His troubles started when he turned his back against this regime and
decided that he no longer wanted to work in the government body. He refused to
take part in the corruption and moved to the private sector where he came under
scrutiny, was arrested and taken to jail. For two months, his family did not
know his whereabouts. Only after he staged a hunger strike did the regime
finally allow him for the first time to call his family and tell them that he
had been arrested. Now, after almost four years, he still has not been allowed
to see his family and can only call them for a period of 2 minutes per day. In
late December, 2006, he was transferred, shackled and blindfolded, from
Isfahan
to
Tehran.
He has been on a hunger strike ever since being relocated.
Mr. Nasser Khirolahi is a 48 year old father of three. His
youngest child is still in secondary school. His oldest son both studies and
tries to provide food for the family’s table. Mr. Khirolahi has not demanded
much; only to be taken back to prison in the city of
Isfahan
so his elderly parents can visit him once a month.
Mr. Nasser Khirolahi knows that if he stays in the
Karaj
prison he will be killed. Unfortunately, this is a common fate of political
prisoners in Iran
who pose a danger to the regime.
As public officials, human rights activist, journalists and
citizens of the world, we plead with you to treat this case as Priority and act
now to save the life of Nasser Khirolahi who may not have a lot of time left to
fight for his life and what he believes.
Sincerely,
Ghazal Omid,
Human Rights Activist, Shiah Islam Scholar and Author of "Living
in Hell"
